Research Team on Aquatic biology Immunology
      Research

        Introduction

The research team on aquatic biology immunology currently has 14 teachers, including 5 professors/researchers, 8 associate professors/associate research fellows, and 1 lecturer. Among them, one person has been included in the New Century Excellent Talents Program of the Ministry of Education, one supported by the first level key funding of the “151” Talent Project in Zhejiang Province, one granted special allowances by the State Council, and two rated as other provincial-level talents. Team members have undertaken more than 50 projects such as the National 973 Program and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and published over 300 papers in Nature Communications, Journal of Hematology&Oncology, and Journal of Experimental Medicine, obtained over 40 authorized patents, released one textbook and academic monograph, and have 2 new aquatic species been certified at the national level (larimichthys crocea “Donghai No.1” and plecoglossus altivelis “Zhemin No.1”). The team has successively won one second prize in the National Science and Technology Progress Award of China, one second prize in the Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement Award (Science and Technology) in Higher Education Institutions, one second prize in the Zhejiang Science and Technology Progress Award, and one first prize, second prize, and third prize of the Ningbo Science and Technology Award, respectively.

        Research direction

Comparative Immunology of Aquatic Animals and Pathogenic Mechanisms of Biohazard Factors

Green Prevention and Control Strategies and Technologies for Aquatic Health

Diagnostic Technology and Products for Biological Hazard Factors in Aquatic Quality and Safety

        Genetic Breeding of Fish

        Foundation of research

① Research on innate immune response mediated by fish phagocytes. The team has discovered new mechanisms by which cytokine and receptor gene subtypes generated by genome doubling in fish regulate the proliferation and mobilization of hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells, as well as macrophage polarization, also discovered new mechanisms for lipopolysaccharide recognition mediated by macrophage internalization in fish, enriching the knowledge of aquatic immunology.

② Research and development of green fishing drugs for aquatic animals. The team has constructed a rapid screening model for candidate drugs of important aquatic pathogens, isolated and identified 32 active monomers of Chinese herbal medicine. Furthermore, the team has synthesized over 500 derivatives using osthol, arctigenin, and magnolol as lead compounds, and analyzed the molecular mechanisms of disease resistance of 20 highly active drugs, providing a reference for developing new green fish drugs.

③ Development of identification and detection technologies concerning pathogenic mechanism, and research on aquatic pathogens. The team has identified pathogenic microorganisms and elucidated their biological characteristics, analyzed the drug resistance phenotype, genotype, and whole genome structural characteristics of multidrug-resistant bacteria in offshore aquaculture waters, developed multiple high-throughput, multi-pathogen, and multi-target isothermal amplification microfluidic chip detection technologies, worked out and promoted the application of matching units; in addition, the team has identified the proteins involved in the interaction between largemouth bass rhabdovirus and carp herpesvirus with the host, and developed vaccines and probiotics for diseases like visceral white spot disease and herpesvirus, safeguarding the healthy breeding of aquatic animals.

④ Breeding of new fish varieties and innovation in aquaculture models. Based on the demonstration, promotion, and subsequent breeding of new aquatic varieties of the larimichthys crocea “Donghai No.1” and the plecoglossus altivelis “Zhemin No.1”, the team has created safe and efficient breeding techniques for plecoglossus altivelis and a new ecological phased breeding model for larimichthys crocea, and improved the industry quality and efficiency. Based on the above work, the team has undertaken over 30 projects such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China, published over 120 academic papers as first author or corresponding author in international journals such as Nat Commun, J Exp Med, and J Hazard Mater, and obtained 26 authorized patents. In recent years, it has won 8 scientific and technological awards, including the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award of China, the second prize of the Outstanding Scientific Research Output Award (Science and Technology) for Higher Education Institutions of the Ministry of Education, and the second prize of the Zhejiang Science and Technology Progress Award.

        Advantages and Features

① Improved the prevention and control system for major aquatic animal diseases, developed a variety of animal health aquaculture inputs: strong bacteria and probiotics for the intestinal microbiota health of aquatic animals, vaccines for the prevention of aquatic animal diseases, and immune regulatory functional feed additives, and new fish drugs for the emergency treatment of major diseases.

② Established a multi-scale health evaluation method and standard system for aquaculture animals: comprehensive diagnostic methods for gut microbiota, immunology, and pathology of aquatic animal health, and diagnostic standards for the microecology of aquatic water body.
